Now that we’ve had a chance to experience The Division through an alpha, closed and open beta I think we can we can stop making comparisons to Destiny. I’ve tried really hard to come up with ways the two games are similiar. There was only one experience I had in the Division beta’s where I felt like I was playing Destiny. During the open beta there was a time that I ran across the Dark Zone without a single encounter with AI or a rogue, and then ran across the pve map without a single random AI encounter.
It is very possible that this had more to do with the fact I was playing a beta. You could argue that doesn’t happen in Destiny. But once you’ve make the trek across the cosmodrome for the 1000th time, the hordes of fallen become transparent. So the only similiarity I can come up with is a negative aspect and one that has yet to be confirmed a reality in TCTD.
Where else can we look for similiarities?
Weapon customization? In the Division you can customize your weapons from an inventory of mods you find or purchase. Destiny provides perks trees for weapons and a re-roll process based on a random generation system. No similarity there.
Character classes? The Division is basically a classless system based on the holy trintiy of RPG character creation, tank, dps and healer. But the ability to flesh out your character picking talents from all three aspects means you are not pigeon-holed into a single role. Destiny gives you some latitude on character customization by integrating it with a perk system tied to the gear you choose for your character. The two systems are as similar as salt and pepper.
Lastly I will mention the PvP arenas. Destiny has its structured, match oriented Crucible venue. The Divisions Dark Zone is an open world map providing a mixture of AI and player opponents, and options for players to engage in cooperative team play in both player vs. AI and player vs. player encounters.
The bottom line is this: Both titles offer gameplay unique to their name. We have had a chance to love and hate Destiny. We’ve had but a glimpse of TCTD, but its enough to conclude that there are far more differences then there are similarities. So much so that I think we can stop trying to make arguments for any similarity at all. Let both games stand alone in their unique identity.
Agree or disagree? Please let me know what you think. I’d love to get your feedback.
Peace,
Gravy
