Basically good graphics don't equal good game. Some of my all time favorite games are side scrollers. I hardly noticed any downgrade, yeah maybe the puddles didn't reflect the sky scrapers, but damn was there amazing detail in everything. The snow especially. I remember seeing a car covered in snow and just thinking damn that looks incredible. I am very pleased with how the game looks, it's actually better than I expected.
I was looking at that same car parked on the end of the street for like ten minutes. It looked so real, just like a car that was the only left in a huge parking lot after a big snow storm and got all plowed in.

Honestly this is mostly just a gamma reduction. You could basically achieve this by turning down your brightness in your visual settings. By default it was WAY too high. I had mine turned down to about 20 and it looked pretty close to those screenshots without the hit to your performance by running a 3rd party post processing application.

Once the game is released there will be better ReShade techniques available.
