I almost bit the bullet last night but wanted to get a better understanding of the game before doing so.

I have seen a little bit of the gameplay but would like to know what it is like to play.

How does it compare to The Division (obviously one is big open world and the other isn't).  Is it a cover based shooter ?.  What common aspects are there and what is vastly different ?.

Would kinda like to try it out this weekend if it is worth a punt.

Also which is best to purchase from....

  • Steam - Cheaper and integrated.
  • UPlay - More expensive but with 20% discount with 100 UPlay credits but not integrated with Steam.
Thanks

It's nothing like the division. You probably heard people compare it to gta. But others can answer better than I.

I just wanted to suggest The Green Man

Not on GreenMan yet it seems.  It also appears to be region locked as on Kingquin.net it is listed as the EMEA version and will not play outside of Europe, The Middle East and Africa.  Good old region locking.

Wildlands is more like a cross between GTA and Farcry. Its a huge open world, third person steath/shooter with a proximity cover system (to take cover you move upto a cover item and your character automatically takes cover behind it so no getting "stuck"!).

Missions can be taken in any order but some don't become active until you've completed the preceding mission (story missions that is). There is resource gathering and skill point gathering similar to The Division, this mainly allows you to unlock additional items (such as C4, better drones etc) that you can use, resources are gathered at missions, side missions and even on the side of the road as you drive past.

GTA elements include being able to ride/drive/pilot every vehicle you come across (motorbikes, cars, vans, trucks, boats, helicopters, aircraft!) and that the local "Police" UNIDAD have a spooky way of finding you and swarming you if you annoy them too much (though for some missions its very difficult not to).

Farcry elements - Open world, missions in any order you wish, shooter and stealth options.

ONE THING - the game is by far more enjoyable in co-op with people you can communicate with. In The Division you can get through missions with random people ok but in Wildlands you HAVE to communicate. The game is single player and OFFLINE enabled if you want to play alone however but it really lacks the expanded enjoyment of having a team of people working together especially when you need four enemies taking down in a synchronised way to avoid detection...there's no other way to do it unless you've unlocked the skill tree extensively.

At the moment I would recommend the game highly, however I wouldn't recommend the Season pass as the two DLC's announced so far are pretty lame to be honest. If you can get the Delux version for the same price as the Standard game (Ubisoft were selling them for the same price before launch!) then get that as you do get an extra mission chain.

I enjoyed Farcry games and Just Cause 2 (not really got in to 3) but never clicked with GTA.  The driving was awful last time I tried.

I have just purchased the Deluxe version of Widelands.  S$5 more than the standard version so around 3 quid more.

It's a tactical shooter focusing on Single Player and Online Co-op. Single player allows you to take control of AI teammates which will be a great help once you get the hang of it.

Of course you'll take cover, but you won't spend 10 minutes crouching behind boxes blasting rounds to dude's head.

Common:

- Guns

- Bag

- Custom character with preset faces

Difference:

- Enemy base aren't 'corridor' type like The Division missions.

- Better looking and more preset faces

- No bullet sponge, harder enemy means they have more and better equipments. And so do you.

- No magical gun stat modifier

- Guns don't drop like candy

- No currency so far, except off-game credits for microtransaction

- World is big, diverse, and doesn't look depressing

- Customisation in some point is better (repaint y'all guns and da parts!)

- Ability to drive car, bikes, boat, plane, helicopter. Best part? Parachute

- You're not a loner mute. Your character have voice and conversation with AI and player teammates

- Gun and parts are unlockables

- Missions are prone to be failed on purpose by jerkbags

- Missions can grow can be done clean or can grow into a chase and heavy gun fight as a reflection to your approach

- Fashion Ghost have better selection and patterns

Ok, 4 hours in.

First two hours were not good.  Playing with randoms, people jumping in and out of the team all the time.  Some people not getting involved etc.  Dying and other 'Team mates' not reviving but just walking past.

Second two hours, joined a team with a couple of guys from the US who had opened a lot of the map and one of which was very chatty.  Got a M4A1 and SRS A1 plus a few mods.  Got swamed and killed a number of times but it was good fun.

The people you play with makes a big difference.

I would agree that it is very much like Far Cry / Just Cause 2 but is a bit harder.  Ammo is a bit issue for me at then moment especially if patrols get allerted.

Some issues though.  The turning circle for your Operator is terrible sometimes.  He also does not hide very well a lot of the time.  Hiding behind a wall with him facing left, rather than turning around to face right when moving right he moves along the wall facing left until his butt is sticking out, then his whole body and then he can shoot totally exposed.  I feel the cover system needs a lot of work.  I would have also prefered to see the option to bypass the wait for the respawn timer like lots of other games have.

I think it will grow on me but is nowhere near as tactical as The Division from what I have seen so far.

Thanks for everyones feedback.

Yeah, you're right. The quality and like mindedness of your group is terribly important in grw. The division has more importance on the grind, so the rewarding experience of your collaboration isn't as significant to the enjoyment of login in.

The beginning of the beta and a few times now co-op ing has been messy and , time spent, pointless. Though I have had some good ones too.

I tried @supercat's idea of creating a second toon just for soloing the story line. Did that last night, and was really enjoyable. I've soloed between groups on my main and it varied betwern boring and difficult. I guess focusing on one area makes it easier and more methodological. And I'd prefer not to be so dependant on sniping but still.

Alone I managed to stealth my way completely though compounds.

I suppose having a regular group helps, so if you find a good one for our timezones lol. My pugger ways might not be suited for grw as it is for the division.

Yeah, I really wish the mechanism handled shooting over cover and peeping around cover than the old clumsy small steps sideways out of cover to have a clear shot then shuffling sideways back into cover. Though is nice to crouch and hit the deck.
