There may have been a couple of purple ones but I only remember the low-level irritants. I got a crappy pistol, an Aug and crappy gloves.
Might be Gear Score/Level dependant, same way caches are for Underground. Put your best gear on before opening.

A very enlightening piece relating to this issue/Gear Score issue:

http://www.divminmax.com/game-updates/why-gear-score-fails/

I might have a rummage through all the gear I've collected and test some things, rebuild from scratch and see about stats, damage resistance etc using LOWER gear score items I still have.

I'm disappointed with my in-game performance last couple of nights, mainly damage resistance. Even with a toughness of almost 205k I'm being shredded by NPC's. I'm not going down (have enough HP to soak) but I'm far too often down to my last bar of health or lower before I realise and pop a heal or similar.

As I run Underground mostly I'm not THAT concerned with Gear Score as there's no level limits set at least. All I have to remember is to re-equip higher GS items before opening any cache's.

It's a good article even though it's a couple of months old. One might argue that the situation has actually worsened since 1.3.
Aboslutely, as it doesn't deal with solid stats and explains how GS items work in essence its still a very valid and simple explanation.

I'm tempted to tweet it to Hamish and see if I get a response.
If you do, suggest a hard cap on talent/skill/stat scores within the DZ as one of the few ways to "fix" the player complaints ... (y'know, a "competition" mode, which caps main stats so that no one is overpowered).

Actually, if the system is working as intended then we need more recalibration options to be honest...then we get, for example, a Gear Score 229 item (weapons as well) but all the stats are horrid and even the native stats are lower than a 204 we have...the option should be there to deconstruct it and either rebuild it once but then have ALL stats unlocked for recalibration OR deconstruct it and we have a crafting pattern (blueprint) for us to use and rebuild the item to the same Gear Score but with same open RNG for a crafted item we get now.

Sums up ALL our woes! LOL

I wish I could have a 1-2-1 with this Hamish fella ... I'm sure we could right the wrongs after a few hours. *sigh* oh the days when I had a direct access to dev's ... don't get me wrong, its not actually glamorous and often seems pointless with much head breaking against brick walls, but if you can get that ONE SMALL THING changed that solves a whole lot of issues.. its nice.

Of course, I understand that a lot of players ask unreasonable...even game breaking...things but if you break all the crap out and filter down to the sensible ideas, then market them to the devs in a really positive way, sometimes they do listen.

To be fair to him he's pretty engaging with players on Twitter. Some developers are so far up their own arses but this fella's quite down to earth.
