Armor Confusion

New to the Forums, but been playing The Division since release.  I'm at level 30 and starting to work on my Yellow gear.  Something I'm starting to notice, though; is that some of the Purple level 30 gear I have has more Armor than the Yellow level 31 gear I can craft.  For instance; I currently have a Purple level 30 Backpack with 650 Armor and the Yellow level 31 blueprint shows that its highest rollable Armor is 572(-ish; not looking, but for example purposes).  Is the Yellow level 31 with less Armor going to provide me more protection on Challenge Mode and such than the Purple level 30 with more Armor?  I know other stats can make some amounts of difference, but just going off of Armor does that make sense?  Thanks to anyone ahead of time that can help with this question.

If the skills and attributes align closer to your play-style then yes, I would sacrifice a bit of armor to optimize your build.

While checking the gears attributes look at for the line that says +Armor. That is why you can craft items with ARM ratings higher than the base range available. For instance your HE pack with the highest roll-able Armor of 572, if you roll one and get one with that exact base rating of 572 but one of the perks is +500 armor then your pack would have an Armor rating of 1072. As others have noted go with which ever gear fits your build the best, having all yellow gear doesn't always mean you've picked the best gear for your play style.

high playstyle/class specific stats > talents > base item armor

....but the best pieces make the most of all of them...

It's good to have an understanding of what Armor does for you as a player. Armor is purely bullet damage mitigation. Meaning you could get hit with a round that would normally do 18k damage or something, but your armor mitigates or absorbs a portion of that damage. So the hit may only be worth 15k or something.

High armor is good where going heads up with an enemy. The more enemies shooting at you, the less armor really helps in that fire fire because the value is degraded quicker.  Think of Armor as your player's sheild. Once it's gone, just like the enemies, your health goes down pretty damn quick.

If presented with the option, ALWAYS take the health over armor!

Your armor value doesn't "degrade, it's a set mitigation. No matter how many bullets are hitting you at once, each hit receives the same reduction based on your armor score, which has a hard cap at 65% mitigation, whether you reach it through pure armor stats, skills, talents, or a combination.

Also, mitigations from a single damage type that contain two (or more) forms of resistance (i.e. bullet damage from elites) are applied in sequence, not both at once. With 65% mits (capped armor) and 10% protection from elites, a 10000 damage bullet is reduced first by armor (-6500 damage, down to 3500 damage) and then the remainder is reduced by elite protection ( a further -350 from the remaining 3500 damage,), resulting in a hit of 3150 damage. A bit of extra health can absorb that shot once, but armor mitigation always reduces damage from each bullet. It's good to have both, but the armor score and other mitigations should be your main focus for survivability...as long as the loss isn't too great, take mitigations over health until you find the armor cap.

That being said, understand that armor ONLY affects bullet damage, with other stats pertaining to other types (exotic, environmental, etc).

Usually you can find Purple armour that protects you more than a high-end piece of gear you have equipped but there will be a high end version of that purple you can find and it will be a lot better than the purple aswell as the weak high-end you have on. hope this helps
