Tales From The Division, The Dark Zone Diary of VelveteenZombie (lvl 30/17)
Entry #3, 3.20.16
The snow fell lightly and the wind whistled softly in the eerie ghost city that had been Midtown Manhatten. The waning hour found our squad low on ammo, round after round having been loosed into armor laden tangos wandering the very streets we sought to tame. Our packs were full. Our spirits high, and our trigger fingers were itchy. Our squad leader, Mod (XB1 GT: BehaviorMOD), pinpointed a safe house and set the waypoint. Our team was working so well we didn't even call for oscar mike, we just jumped off, boots wet, for a moment of safety and a chance to top off our ammo stores. Mod's fire team breaking up the right side of the road, Rel's (XB1 GT: RELNEK) taking the left. We rounded the final corner, a tall and narrow alley, stacked to its stinking brim with dumpsters and yellow marked hazmat bags. It was a scene that in another life, an old life, we would have found repugnant and irresponsible. But in today's post-apocalyptic reality, it became a place where the white circle on the door inspired deep sighs of relief. The Dark Zone isn't exactly terrifying–we were the terrors of the DZ, but that doesn't mean it isn't a location that carries with it some amount of trepidation. And the only place where that pall of the unknown is lifted is in a safe house.
Safety reached, we took turns running inside to stock up. But the trouble with safe houses is that they're only safe inside. Ingress and egress are stranger zones in a world where generally, stranger = danger.
Four strangers rounded the alley corner. They appeared to be more trigger itchy than we were, their guns instantly leveling on us. We figured we'd play it cool. We were at the safe house....they were at the safe house...if we're cool, this can by cumbaya, right?
Then the first shots rang out. I don't know who shot first. I only knew that my radio headset was crackling with gunfire and Rel's fireteam was calling for backup. Bullets were flying, ISAC was updating me, and then my screen started flashing RED with hits. Power roll. I was halfway to the alley entrance and exfiltrating from the death zone when one of the Rogue Agents resolved in my view. The MP5 on my shoulder snapped up and rounds spat into him. As we exited the alley, the tango backed around left and sought cover behind a crate. Another power roll and I put more rounds into him. He returned fire and must have scored a critical hit since my health bar dropped to nil and I ducked into cover, dropping an aid station. The Rogue Agent pursued me and it was OK Corral for a hot minute. He dropped me and fled north behind an abandoned fire truck. God bless support stations with life support. I was back up and spamming first aid kits while running down the Rogue Agent. Now it was personal. Rounding the fire truck, he brought his gun up, but mine was already shouldered and firing. He dropped with alacrity. Grinning, I closed and reminded him that the night is dark, and full of terrors. My first Dark Zone Roge Agent kill. Thanks for the gear.
