How accurate is “Manhattan”?

Dwarven Lord Under The Mountain
As I’m not a native and only have a passing knowledge of where major landmarks, buildings and points of interest are in New York/Manhattan, I wondered if anyone has taken the time to go on a “sight seeing tour” of the game?

Are the major buildings all there? If you were a native New Yorker, would you be able to recognise neighbourhoods and navigate around?

I don’t even know if its really to scale to be honest but are there places like Trump Tower? Radio City? Grand Central? I mean I’ve passed through the areas but are these places there even if they’re not labelled?

Just how good were Massive at bringing us Manhattan?

…side note I am always determined to have Google Earth open one day as I play through the game and just walk the streets finding all these places…if they’re there.

Well I will say after viewing google map and earth after your post lol, got me curious hahaha!, I live in Canada by the way, but of what I was seeing, It is pretty much to scale but maybe 500m to 1 km off for in game purposes but I found it pretty close for size of map. In game it is quicker to go from point A to point B compare to real life.

Some major content in game is the same as real life, Empire state building, Grand central, Lexington event center, Medical Clinic etc...But if you are talking about midtown music, q building, kalkesse sport and some other little landmarks like this, simply doesn't exist or I just didn,t see it. Or they replace the same area by something different for the game itself like refuelling station and the extraction point in DZ3...there is a park on the map (real life) but I didn't see an Ice rink.

Maybe somebody from there could say I am wrong too lol. I am not the best in geo but I spend alomost an hour on this just because of you hahahaha!

Yeah this is the issue I'm having and wondering about, how much have they decided to keep and what have they either changed or left out for some reason. For example the gas station you mentioned that's a park in real life, not sure the reason to change it and a park seems easier to "build" digitally.

Its the level of detail I'd love to have time to explore for example. Maybe we should set up "Agent Guide Tours" ... Come visit Manhattan, let our expert Agent Guides show you the sights of New York....

...and kill a few locals along the way.

I lived in southern CT the first 26 years of my life.  It was just a short walk to the train and a quick ride into the city.  I can pretty much get around with my eyes closed...though I don't recommend trying that :-P  For the most part it's pretty damn accurate.  Even the hotel I often stay at (Hotel Pennsylvania) is where it should be...though obviously under a different name.  I don't recall any subway entrances near the hotel, but for the purposes of the game I'll let it slide.  The Garden, ESB, and Grand Central Terminal are all where they belong...and, honestly, I think that's all we can ask.  Obviously the smaller details are going to be different, if only because the city itself is constantly changing.

I'm headed there next month.  I'll be sure to bring back video of me and the wife entering the DZ--that sounds bad but you know what I mean lol

Hey Quinch,

I'v only visited once, but I was at Times Square and Rockefeller Center. Time square seems accurate for the most part, I do notice a few differences. And needless to say it's not full of people. I don't think I remember Rockefeller Center being on The Division map. But I would have to look to see if that street is even reachable in-game.

Found this too. Maybe worth a read: http://gamingrespawn.com/featured/7172/close-divisions-new-york-real-thing/

Been for a tour tonight, not everywhere but found one major thing missing

....the Chrysler Building ... there is a building there but its certainly not Chrysler unfortunately. Attached picture from tonight sums my feelings up.

Apart from that, Empire state of course, Flatiron building, Grand Central and the United Nations all modelled well.

What I want to know is  ... are the Dunkin Donuts where they should be?

Considering opening a dedicated thread for Manhattan "Agent Holiday Tours" photos ... but here or in Agent Created Content?

Oh! one thing I did note. The apartment interiors often may have the same layout but the interior finishes are radically different based on where you are. For example, an apartment near Maidson Square Garden are (what I'd consider) nice, but normal ... however ... an apartment I went into near the United Nations Building is obviously vastly more expensive (and masculine) inside, everything down to the quality and finish of the counter tops and bedding!

(also picked up some stages of a story I'd not found before via Echos...not paid too much attention to echos except collecting them but decided to listen to one I picked up The Water Club, I bumped into the same couple in one of the apartments as well telling some of the same story but from earlier - so I'm sort of rewinding it - I need to find the rest now though!! It was facinating because I need to know what happened on "that roof"!)

Please don't turn 'In the Dark Zone' in to another 'Up the OXO Tower'  :10_wink:  (google at your own risk).

I used to date someone living in Manhattan quite a few years ago now.  Visited a number of times but never really did the tourist stuff.  I was mainly around the Upper East Side and Battery Park / Brooklyn Bridge or out of the city.  Would be nice to see some more places opened up.  Lots of good buildings / areas to open up on the map yet if Massive wanted / were able to.

My brother lives in Brooklyn, and I bought him the Division at release...he says it's fairly accurate, but some things are missing, and some things/(buildings?) were added.
I'm going to just act like an excited tourist and see what interesting places I can find! Do a travel review .... of sorts. lol!
