Gear score formula.

Does anyone know how they figure what your gear score is?

I think it's just the average of all equipped items.

that's what I was thinking, but it seems odd to me that when I run lower dz. I use my normal gear (lowest gs on that is 182) and 1 lvl 204 gun now (used to be the 163 Aug). All I have to do is equip two green guns to do this, but if I equip, for example, my lvl 138 m1a as a secondary my GS jumps to 165.
