Wildlands – A Review after CBT & OBT

General Impressions:

Graphics -

Visually a breath-taking achievement. Simply put the visuals of a living, breathing and realistic world are there…so much so, as to prompt a very real physical response from me! When that fog rolls in from the mountains I physically felt cold to the bone…no other game has done that JUST on visual effects to me.

Gameplay -

Open ended missions that you had the power to choose how you approached them…this all felt right. Often there were missions that, on the face of it and after cursory review looked almost impossible for me to complete but after patience and a proper reccie of the target it all fell into place. Likewise, seemingly easy missions often proved impossible if handled in a sloppy fashion. All this is a positive for me.

One shot one kill for most enemies was such a nice change, whilst those wearing body armour were dealt with logically as well (except for some glaring points to be picked up later).

The story missions were well thought out and varied significantly. They made good use of the environments and terrain as well. I liked the small side-encounters but also wished these led to more things other than a resource boost.

Vehicle use was generally a nightmare! However, land vehicle handling had clearly improved from Closed beta to Open beta vehicles had an odd mix of being too fragile (small bumps did significant damage) but also far too rugged (I shouldn’t be able to take a family sedan up a mountain without wreaking it!). Helicopters….don’t talk to me about helicopters!! The small ones were all but unflyable…at least the large Blackhawks faired much better for some reason.

Whilst the gameplay was solid, missions interesting and varied, graphics were absolutely stunning the question after the two beta tests for me is …. How long will this actually engage me?

This is where I’m concerned as once you’ve completed the main missions and obtained collectables…what then? Additional missions as paid or achievement DLC? That’s fair enough but what about randomly generated and dynamic events? To use The Division as an example we have at least two instances that drag me back… Underground & HVT’s…they’re randomised events/missions that change to a certain extent each time. Do we have much indication of this in GRW?

The answer is … no, not really. More importantly those that do…what would make you want to play those missions?

One of the few random, reoccurring missions was to stop a supply convoy (annoyingly hard!) but the reward…. 2,000 points of supplies…seemed like something I wouldn’t need very often. I had far more supply points than I could spend as spending them was restricted by Skill Points…skill points being a finite resource on each map. Once you’ve collected that medal….that’s it.

So why do I have so many thousands of supplies I wonder?

After 8hrs of gameplay and two regions virtually 100% completed for all items….I wonder what will be coming to promote longevity?

That all said if each region has 5-10 missions and there are 15 regions and it took me 8hrs to clear just two regions….I guess we can’t complain at 60+ hours for a game …can we?

Overall though I had a fantastic time in the Beta testing, I hope a few items are polished before release such as some graphical glitches and the vehicle mechanics. I would also like a way to be able to reverse alert status for UNIDAD in a region…perhaps a mission that makes you more friendly to them. In both regions I was often constantly hounded by UNIDAD on sight and without direct provocation, to such an extent that they would follow me back to a “secure” base even AND STILL BE ATTACKING ME EVEN AFTER A CUT SCENE!

Or chase me from one side of a map right to another…on foot as well as by vehicles! Even after I’d done side missions, broken contact, done everything right. They still caught up with us.

I mean, fine, maybe there’s no such thing as a safe place in a truly open world but I’d love to be able to bribe, cajole or otherwise placate UNIDAD. They’re “meant” to be generally the good guys, even if many are taking bribes etc I feel they’re painted as just another cartel style enemy but with just better guns and armour.

On that matter…UNIDAD troops soak up damage to unnatural degrees. Body armour is one thing but at least fall over and stagger if I triple tap you in the chest! UNIDAD should have better weapons, better Ai in the troops to make them more effective (less stupid) and better equipment but their troops aren’t T-1000 killer robot machines.

Often, actually all the time, I was overestimating the intelligence of the Ai. I look at games like Sniper Elite and realise that Ai doesn’t need to be very brainy or observant to make a good game and I ended up making mistakes or not attacking at all because I assumed a far higher level of observational skills from the Ai.

At the end of the day I was impressed significantly enough that, as a multiplayer co-operative game with players I knew, it was enough for me to purchase and I have. Apart from select small scale missions I can only see me playing this as co-operative but I also feel a game like this would benefit from some form of filter in the match making so that more likeminded players can match up easily. That said…this was a FREE beta….things like that are sure to bring out all the A-holes.

Dang, the closure was at 6am est. When they said 27th I was hoping I could hit it one more time. The last time I played the grouping was getting pretty good, mics, tactical. One guy in a group could fly the copters.... perfectly. We used the same copter on mltiple missions and that bird incurred no damage, So, we'd all pile into the copter and patiently wait for him to take the drivers (obviously pilots) seat. Overall most of my groups showed this cohesiveness.

Maybe, I was lucky with the end of the beta, but the crowd was very different from the start, no mics, all glory, no waiting. Really would have liked some more time to get the feel of the game with the team work that was evolving.

Good question.

During the whole betas, I've been trying to team up with random and in the last session of mine, I had two different type of friends joined in. One guy wasn't exactly a gamer, but he played more non-linear games. While the other was more of a gamer, but he seemed to like linear games where everything is obvious to do.

In my observation:

- The 'non-linear' type of friend didn't feel bored at all. He found the game was fun. As seen in the game, he would off-road and crap and would play the tactic 'seriously'. However, he would only find the 'fun' as long as I'm in.

- The 'linear' type of friend felt bored within approximately half an hour. He said it's repetitive.

- I myself am the 'non-linear' guy and my thought is that this game's a bit boring, but not repetitive. I feel 'bored' after repeating missions to help other guys. I also feel 'bored' because there's not much to do other than cruising and shooting, ignorantly speaking. But I wouldn't call it 'repetitive' simply because you have tons of ways to accomplish missions, many guns to use, and you don't have to play drone everytime before you shoot and stepping in the hostile area. You can sneak inside and stealth kill one by one a-la Sam Fisher instead.

Based on that, I think the longevity of this game partly relies on the player since the game content itself doesn't offer much; this game is literally a sandbox shooter. I and my 'non-linear' friend agree that we shouldn't play this game everyday. And as I observed, I found this game could be something I would call as a 'hub game' where friends could load this to just screw around while the actual activity was to chat (I and my friend don't do this, though). I personally would say PvE Matchmaking is also a big help to extend the game's life, but it's not going to be a viable option to choose with the amount of people messing around. Lastly, they said they're going to add PvP and so I can see this game will live its life as the alternative of CS:GO. Sad but I can see this game is going to end up like that.

I'm hoping it gets some of the PvP from Future Soldier so that it has a COD-like end game of PvP.

THIS!

I feel that the developers for Wildlands and to a lesser extent Division have made these games SPECIFICALLY so that the amount of enjoyment you get out of the game is proportionate to the attitude and play style of the player themselves.

This is *good* for players like you and I and the majority of those on these forums as we play these games to explore, to quasi-role play, for pure enjoyment. However I can see this game getting the type of negative feedback from the wider community because the majority of gamers out there are "Reward Driven". They can no longer garner rewards from participation alone and have a disproportionate need for constant in-game and obvious gratification (get this weapon, get this special power, get this level, exceed this persons score etc etc). They will....and already are....slating this game terribly ("why isn't there PvP / game is too easy / too short / not enough story").

Both these games gain so much more when played with the right people around you and the right mental attitude.

For some reason I hope the PvP has its own character creation while everything else (the guns, parts) follow our PvE progress.

I mean, 'corrupt agent' lore is used too much. Unless the PvP is just an off-lore mode.
A PvP element would be tricky. However a "lore" is already in the game with the ex-Ranger we took down in the Open Beta...who said he was alone?

However, what I'd like to see as a PvP would be something like Squad or Arma and not a Call of Doodie style simple capture the flag on tiny maps sub-game. To be honest I'd like the game opened up like Arma is to the community to create scenarios for PvP of their own rather than a "here's our idea of what you want as PvP" as Division has. With the size of the maps, built in bases, civilians all around ... lets face it, its an Arma style game already. You just need a set of tools given to the community to be able to build campaigns like they have in Arma.

...though I realise that might leave Console users behind and without a good PvP at all *sad*

Sometimes I'm confused reading my own post.
Its ok, i'm confused every morning when I wake up and realise I'm still trapped in this primitive meat-sack waiting for the ship to come and collect me.....

...but also very excited about Wildlands (and loving Last Stand Mode in 1.6!)

We can expect GR Wildlands to have cash card anytime soon.

Not sure. Depends what DLC they can come up as remember the premium vendor in The Division is pretty much only an alternative way of offering DLC Skin packs (for more money as I noticed).
Since Wildlands isn't RPG, I could definitely see some paid cosmetic stuff like skins and outfits.  You can use Uplay points to buy a jacket, G36 and cigar, why not allow cash to buy this kind of stuff.

Haha! for sure, I'm actually busy seeing what I can unlock via Ghost Recon Network. So far I've unlocked GRN vanity items - Patch, Tshirt, Backpack, Headset & Cap. Aiming for weapon skins etc but I used Uplay points to unlock the G36 because... I want to use that instead of the P416.

Oh and @DeadSockPuppet welcome to the Task Force.
