So, guys I have to ask this question. We have been probing it on our podcast but do you think it's fair to compare The Division with Destiny? I have noticed tons of salt going both ways whenever Destiny is mentioned in the same breath as The Division. Things like Destiny killer.

What are your thoughts?

I think it's fair in that we don't have any other game on the same scale to compare The Division to. So I compare it to what I am familiar with, Destiny.

Let the discussion begin! lol!

Hmm I've seen this question pass by on several forums. To me they are two different beasts.

They both are loot-based shooters but to me that is where the comparison ends. Destiny being a First Person Shooter with an emphasis on shooting mechanics while The Division is a Third Person Shooter mixed with RPG and an emphasis on those roleplaying elements. Also with the setting being really different I'm having a hard time comparing the two of them.

When it comes to categorizing games, I think it totally fair to compare them. RPG, shooter with a co-op focus. They're definitely different when it comes to a lot of things, but when it comes to that I think it is definitely fair. From the moment they both aired at E3 2013 people used them together. No you're not going to be able to use space magic in The Division, or try to find a cure for Small pox in Destiny, but yes you're gonna be immersed In world with your friends, shooting things up in both. :)

Fair ball game! A lot of great points above. Why I think it is going to challenge the player base for destiny is due to the community aspect of the game. The Division is structured to play with friends most of the time (you can lone wolf it though) just like destiny. It will be the first always online competitor to destiny.

Absolutely fair. We are all trying to get a frame of reference for what this thing is and we naturally compare it to things we know. It is persistently online. It's a shooter. It has a looter slant. It's co-op. It is human to compare and contrast things to a known value or characteristic. Hopefully soon we will all be discussing the things that it does better than Destiny. Personally I hope they battle each other for player base well into the future. It will push the bar higher and higher.

I'd say its fair to compare. (See what I  did there? Lol) Like others have said, they share many similar elements. I gotta say though, I see Destiny much clearer now then I did at launch so it does feel like comparing a girlfriend of a long long time to some hot new girl who's still got me swooning. Hard as it is, I'm trying to temper my excitement and avoid comparing too much for that reason.

I think it's natural for us to seek out comparisons, especially when dealing with a new IP.  Destiny is a major game right now, so it's only natural that people would want to compare things.  If this came out before Destiny, we'd be comparing it to something like Borderlands, Gears or WoW because there was very little in mainstream gaming that was fusing these Genres, and we'd ask if Destiny was going to be like The Division.

It's not just a forum topic.  GI did the same thing.  http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/01/20/five-ways-that-the-division-is-like-destiny-and-nine-ways-it-s-not.aspx?utm_content=bufferb5e8a&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

The real upside to the comparison is hopefully both companies can take ideas from what the other does well, and learn from the others mistakes.  We've seen how Destiny has changed since launch trying to improve itself, and Hopefully those things caught Massive's attention.

I like the analogy

you make me feel dirty when you put it like that haha.

Anyway I've never played destiny so I really have no place to talk but as for comparing games, I'd say of course we have the right too. As consumers we want to play the best game out there. They are quite similar, online, open-world, shooters, co-op play, they are surely going to be battling each other for player base and we will all win from that.

exactly! Better for us gamers!

Just don't screw us over at launch Ubisoft, like Bungie did. I sure hope that is what they learned most from Destiny. Gotta say though seeing Brooklyn axed from launch sure has got me a little nervous that they're following that Bungie strategy.

From how pleased people were with the alpha; I think we'll be alright with the beta.

Yeah but activision has a past with ruining games

Destiny will lose gamers to division

They said 10 year game yet no dlc this year. Atleast as of yet that's been announced. If they don't release news/content soon....

Division will rise to the top

Those 10 years, development was included right? No way they'll keep it going for 8 more years

I think they are similar games on the surface. But once you dig into them they really start to show how different they are. The Division is WAY more RPG than Destiny, and Destiny is more of a shooter.

Well I hope the shooting mechanics are as good as they look in the gameplay videos.

I'm a third person gamer all the way, so I think that will be the biggest factor when being compared to Destiny. I never could really get into Destiny, even after several attempts. I'm hoping it's just the opposite with The Division and it hooks me right from the get go. Being it's in third person has my hopes high. I do have to say though my only concern right now is the silent protagonist aspect and being able to form a strong bond with the character as a result of that.
