“Like others, the referendum had come down for him to a single emotional issue, that of Britain regaining sovereignty over its immigration policy. And this issue was so emotional and dominant for him that it totally crowded out a calm and comprehensive assessment of the multiplicity of factors in play.” - Mohamed A. El-Erian chief economic adviser at Allianz when referring to a friend who’d been pro-free trade all his life.
He goes on to mention that two potentially good outcomes are that the EU left behind will be more coherent and focused without the distraction of a UK who’ve never been fully committed to the ideas of the EU … also that this may be a wake up call for British politics to start some real affirmative action. Neither of these are positives really for the UK as a whole, certainly the first indicates that the UK is going to be significantly left behind economically.
Personally, as someone who's a progressive Socialist, pro-free trade, pro-multiculture, pro-technology and science this whole thing has been a disaster. All that's already happened is exactly as the Remain camp warned of:
£ has fallen to a 30 year low (now only $1.32!!)
Stock market crash (still falling, FTSE250 down almost 1,000 points today!)
Property Market crash (average of £20,000 reduction in house values)
Division of the union, Scotland are going to split, Northern Island are also likely to press for devolution as well.
Steady and overt increase in racist attacks, verbal and physical and a general air of fear in the country.
Most of the "promises" (read: Lies) made by Britex camp have been withdrawn already with the fabled additional £350m NHS funding being one of the first to be retracted. A campaign based on fear wins over reason and rational thought. I can't say the Remain campaign was much better either!! Negative election campaigning on both sides for the last 50 years was again used and I think both sides got the result they deserved.
I am still unsure if any exit will even happen though, regardless of this result. Article 50 hasn't been invoked, can't until we have a new PM, may be further deferred until a General Election in November ... and at the end of that I feel the political establishment will still refuse to press what amounts to a button initiating a pre-emptive nuclear strike!
As it stands I feel the political parties will drag this out in the hope the monkeys who voted for this crap get distracted by the latest adventures of the Kardashians and forget all about it.
...but Britex voters were told to "ignore the experts" ... so what do I know. I feel so bitter about it that I'm willing to let the UK drown in the hole of its own making and I've looked into emigration options for my family and I.
