General advice for relative newcomer

Hi All. My friend and I have been playing D2 together. We finished the main campain, have chosen our specialities, and are basically going through the main missions and other stuff again. But our gear doesn't seem to be getting any better? Pretty much everything that drops is around the yellow 290 mark. We also bought the year one pass. Is there anything else we should be doing to progress at this point? Thanks!

You need to keep moving into the next world tiers. Continue beating the strongholds and you'll move up and start finding way better stuff super quick.
