Originally, they celebrated the 5th November with a bonfire and fireworks, as a way for the good citizenry to celebrate not putting a bomb under Parliament and taking down government.
Of course, over time the message is corrupted, and "that guy" is now a symbol of how the good citizenry should put a bomb under government.
It is said Guy Fawkes was the last man to enter Parliament with good intentions.
